The revitalization of the Old Post Office in Uptown Waterloo presented a distinctive opportunity to preserve a nationally significant heritage building while adapting it for modern use. This adaptive reuse project successfully reimagines a historic landmark, transforming it into a vibrant, multi-functional urban space that meets contemporary building, accessibility, and performance standards without compromising its original architectural character.

The project has been nominated for the Paul Oberman Award for Adaptive Reuse (Large-Scale / Team / Corporate), recognizing excellence in heritage conservation and thoughtful modernization.

Fenestration Strategy & Heritage Solutions

Window replacement played a critical role in balancing historical authenticity with present-day functionality. The ground floor originally featured a large operable double-hung window, which was no longer required due to the commercialization of the space. To retain the original visual proportions and character, a Pinnacle direct set window with a 2-inch check rail was installed, carefully replicating the traditional sightlines of the original assembly.

Additional heritage-sensitive design elements included:

Stile and rail exterior sash profiles
Cottage-style 60/40 sash configuration
Ogee glass stop profiles

These details ensured the new fenestration remained visually consistent with the building’s historic fabric while delivering modern performance.

Architectural Significance

Originally completed in 1913 and designed by David Ewart, Chief Architect for Canada, the Old Post Office is a defining example of Romanesque Revival architecture. Key features include a stone gable, turrets, and a prominent clock tower that anchors the Uptown Waterloo streetscape.

As noted by Architectural Conservancy Ontario, the project required meticulous preservation and advanced engineering solutions due to the building’s age and deterioration. Modern systems such as HVAC, ventilation, and accessibility upgrades were seamlessly integrated, including the addition of an elevator, all without altering the historic roofline or architectural elements.

A contemporary infill structure was introduced on two sides of the building, carefully designed to complement the original architecture while preserving the clock tower’s visual prominence. The result is a cohesive composition that respects the past while supporting new uses.

Inspiring architecture and design insights.
