The Architectural Challenge
Completed in 1913 and originally designed by D. Ewart, chief architect for Canada, the Old Post Office is an iconic landmark defined by its Romanesque architecture, stone gables, turrets, and historic clock tower.
Transforming this historically significant, yet functionally outdated, structure into a vibrant, multi-functional commercial space required a delicate balance. The project demanded meticulous preservation of the building's aesthetic hierarchy while simultaneously updating the building envelope to meet rigorous modern engineering and accessibility standards. At WD Craftline, our task was to engineer a fenestration solution that acted as the invisible bridge between 20th-century heritage and 21st-century building science.
The WD Craftline Solution: Precision & Preservation
To breathe new life into the structure without compromising its historic character, our technical team collaborated closely with project partners to deploy premium Windsor Pinnacle Clad window systems in a striking Charcoal Gray finish.
A major technical requirement involved the ground floor. The space originally featured massive double-hung windows that no longer required operability due to the new commercial layout. To preserve the architectural integrity of the facade, WD Craftline integrated a Pinnacle Direct Set window featuring a custom 2" check rail. This high-performance configuration flawlessly mimics the traditional sight lines of the original double-hung units while providing superior commercial-grade thermal protection.
Furthermore, the architectural illusion was reinforced through meticulous detailing. We utilized a stile and rail exterior sash profile, an exact cottage 60/40 split, and an ogee glass stop profile. These curated refinements ensured that the window replacement strategy maintained the historic soul of the landmark.
The Result: Award-Nominated Excellence
The completed revitalization perfectly complements the modern infill building wrapping the site, maintaining the clock tower's dominance and ensuring the space's continued community relevance.
Through flawless on-site execution and elite product partnerships, WD Craftline helped secure the project's nomination for the prestigious Paul Oberman Award for Adaptive Reuse (Large-scale / team / corporate). It stands as a testament to our philosophy: we don't just supply glass—we engineer the invisible to bring visionary architecture to life.
